The Foundation offers a number of Scholarships related to HYC Junior Sailing Programs. See which one applies to you below.

Bumps Scholarship

The Vernon G. Eberwine, Jr. “Bumps” Fund was established in February 2017 in memory of Vernon G. Eberwine, Jr., to enable deserving youth to participate in Hampton Yacht Club’s summer sailing programs. Vernon Gaskins “Bumps” Eberwine, Jr. (August 26, 1925 – January 8, 2017).

The Bumps Scholarship is a need-based Scholarship and is available to support participation in the HYC Junior Sailing Opti Summer program or the HYC Junior Sailing c420 Program.

Foundation Scholarship

The HYC Foundation Scholarship was created in 2024 to offer opportunities to introduce youth to sailing who might not otherwise have the opportunity to enjoy the sport. Although presently limited to supporting participants in the HYC Junior Sailing Summer program and in the HYC Junior Sailing High School c420 Program, it is envisioned that this Scholarship could eventually support a wider array of sailing programs depending upon the desires of the donors funding this Scholarship.

The Foundation Scholarship is a need-based Scholarship and, for 2025, is available to support participation in HYC Junior Sailing Opti Summer program or in the HYC Junior Sailing c420 Program (Program description and dates pending for 2025).

Opti Summer Program

The Foundation is offering up to 20 weeks (broken between 1- and 2-week) full Scholarships for Hampton Roads youth, ages 5-18, wishing to attend an HYC Opti Summer Program for Explorer, Opti 1 or Dinghy 1 or 2.

This is a need based Scholarship.

High School c420 Clinics

The Foundation will be offering Foundation Scholarships for Hampton Roads High School sailors interested in sailing c420s. The Junior Sailing program is presently deciding what program to offer in 2026 for c420s. Stay tuned for further information.

This is a need based Scholarship.

Junior Sailing Travel Expense Scholarship

The Junior Sailing Travel Expense Scholarship is designed to assist with travel and related costs for eligible long-distance away events for HYC Junior Sailors. This includes Travel Expenses for Opti Racing Team racers attending major long-distance events and for non-Opti-platform racers attending long-distance events (without the need for the event to be a "major" event).

Scholarships for Opti Racing Team events are applied for by the Sailing Director. Scholarships for non-Opti-platform racers must be applied for by the parent of the racer.

We have a very limited amount of these Scholarships (only $4,000 for 2025) and the Application process will open September 1, 2025 and close December 15, 2025.
